Every year around mid-July, once the storms start, Tucson gets flooded with door knockers, most out of city or out of state, looking to cash in on storm damage before the season ends. A good number do shoddy work, don't communicate, skip the proper credentials, and ghost the second the insurance side gets complicated.
The out-of-state ones aren't building a business here. They roll into town, find a cheap sub crew, pay a local company to work off their license, sign up as many homeowners as they can in a couple weeks, then head home. The ones who did get a roof out of the deal find out later, when they call about a warranty issue and nobody picks up.
Before you let anyone on your roof this time of year, ask for their ROC license number, insurance, bond, and where they're actually based. If they hesitate or can't produce it, walk away.
We had a client on the north side of town last summer with a 30-square hot mop roof that took hail damage. A company out of Texas, which she didn't know at the time, knocked on her door and got the claim approved through insurance, a process that usually takes about a month. Hers took three.
Because she has a mortgage, the insurance check was cut with her and the mortgage company as payees, standard on any covered claim. The contractor ran it through a third party instead of handling it directly, and the check disappeared. Right around the time it should have surfaced, the contractor packed up, went back to Texas, and stopped answering.
She found us through a neighbor we'd roofed the year before. We went straight to the insurance company and had the check reissued, a process that takes at least two weeks on its own before it even reaches the mortgage company.
